Pupils Create Fire Safety Campaign
22 October 2008
School children from Merseyside have been thinking creatively to ensure their peers are aware of the dangers of playing with fire.
They include 12 pupils from St Edmund of Canterbury School in Huyton who attend the Beacon Project, a youth engagement scheme run by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. As such they were well-placed to create a number of fire-related radio adverts.
At the same time, 8 young people from St George of England High School, Bootle have been making features for CityTalk 105.9. The 5 features will form part of Paul Jacobs' Drivetime show and be broadcast in the run-up to Bonfire Night while the fire-safety adverts will be broadcast on the Huyton pupil's local radio station KCC Live.
The school children received radio training which enabled them to interview other young people about fire safety. They also spent some time at Crosby Fire Station where they recorded the experiences of firefighters.
Ariel's work with the Bootle pupils is part of a three-year project funded by Children in Need with the intention of making a difference to the lives of disadvantaged young people.
