Denial is Every English Teacher’s Dream
05 November 2009
Rainhill High School’s Head of English Steve Talbot cannot speak highly enough of Ariel’s interactive learning resource ‘Denial’: “There’s just so much in the pack, with so little for teachers to do”.
‘Denial’, which focuses on bullying, homophobia, and peer pressure, was used by all of Rainhill High School’s year 9 English classes over the course of a half-term.
As the lesson plans and worksheets cover a half-term of work, Steve suggested it is an “ideal transitional unit between Year 9 and 10”.
The results at Rainhill High show why Steve talks so highly of this resource - 43 % of pupils achieved grades above those which had been predicted.
Rainhill High used the resource for both Key Stage 3 and 4, as the pack not only covers the new National Curriculum framework for Key Stage 3 but can also be used for pieces of GCSE coursework in Speaking and Listening and in Original Writing.
Indeed, Steve pointed out there are “a number of pupils in Year 9 who already have an A* piece of coursework before they go into Year 10”.
He added:
“’Denial’ is a win, win. It delivers effective citizenship education as well as significantly improving results in both Key Stage 3 and 4.”
