What is Denial 2 and how does it support the English Curriculum?

The Denial 2 learning resource is an online, interactive, multimedia education programme, that uses a collaborative approach in order to raise awareness of and tackle homophobic bullying for secondary age students. The website builds on the already successful Denial English Resource and the film produced by Brookside writer, Shaun Duggan. The resource has been designed in consultation with young people from LGBT groups who have real life experience dealing with these issues.

Denial 2 includes a wide range of spoken language, listening and creative writing activities that are capable of being assessed within English lessons, which are mapped to the curriculum.

An example exercise is our ‘Actions and Consequences’ exercise which requires young people to rank the images in order of their importance and consider to what extent they lead to the tragic consequences at the end of the film.
Young people will be asked to make their own judgments. The exercise works best when young people have different opinions and begin to debate which actions are more or less important.

Can Denial 2 be used to 'close the gap'?

The resource can be used for both whole-class and targeted interventions; we recommend a whole-class approach because the resource is designed to take a preventative approach.

Denial 2 can be used for all ability levels and meets the needs of a range of learning styles. Activities are interactive and visually stimulating and so particularly suitable for lower ability groups.

It can therefore be used to motivate disadvantaged pupils in order to support schools to ‘close the gap’ within their school environment.

The educational content is underpinned by a clear logic model and good practice guidance document.

What is the impact of Denial 2?

Denial 2 has been shown to be particularly effective in engaging and motivating those young people who are currently failing in English and can assist schools to work with this group to achieve the Government’s floor standards.

Denial 2 is demonstrated to increase academic attainment, to see more evaluation content please click here.
